To further support Rugby Victoria’s commitment to gender equality, a new education and participation initiative, the Quilt Program has been introduced to the Victorian rugby community.
The program will use sport as the vehicle to prevent violence against women and children and aims to ensure that both women and children are not only safe, but respected and treated as equals. The Quilt Program will involve initiatives that address the drivers of gender inequality as outlined in Change the Story, Australia’s national framework for the primary prevention of violence against women and their children.
The Quilt Program will follow a best practice ‘whole of sport’ approach with two streams of participation/ education program, and a club development/education framework.
The Quilt Program objectives are to:
- Engage the rugby community to be champions of the Quilt Program to prevent violence against women and children.
- Utilise rugby as a vehicle to challenge preconceived gender stereotypes across all communities in Victoria.
- Position rugby as a driving force for long term societal change surrounding gender equality and attitudes to women.
The training is based on Our Watch’s Change the Story: A shared framework for the primary prevention of violence against women and their children in Australia. The six-week program incorporates strength and conditioning training, Rugby specific training and education workshops.
